The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) is pressing the federal government to promptly reconvene discussions regarding salary renegotiations, settle overdue salaries, and avert a looming strike.

The union criticized the government for not adhering to timely salary payments and called for the implementation of agreed salary increases and the equitable distribution of Earned Allowances to all qualified personnel.

In a statement issued by Mohammed Ibrahim, SSANU's National President, the organization insists on job security amid any reforms, alongside the establishment of an ongoing consultative framework between the government and university unions to facilitate continuous discussions and preempt disputes.

The statement condemned the continuous delays in remuneration for staff across federal and some state universities, emphasizing the non-payment of approved salary increments and other benefits.

"The council observes that these repeated delays have led to significant hardship for our members and their households, diminished morale, and adversely affected productivity within the university system.

"Consequently, the National Executive Council (NEC) insists on the prompt resolution of all outstanding salary-related matters and the creation of a dependable and unified salary disbursement system," part of the statement declared.

SSANU lamented the neglect of university staff welfare and the ongoing failure to resolve essential labor concerns, stressing that such oversight could no longer be accepted.

The union urged the federal government to take immediate, genuine, and decisive actions to finalize the renegotiation process, address all outstanding entitlements, and restore trust in its commitment to equity within the university sector.

SSANU has shown restraint, understanding, and goodwill despite facing numerous challenges.

"However, the NEC makes it clear that should the government fail to meet the outlined deadline, the union will not hesitate to initiate lawful and decisive industrial action.

"SSANU remains firmly united and fully intends to safeguard the rights, welfare, and dignity of its members," the statement concluded.
