The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, has issued a warning that the persistent neglect of young individuals could lead to an increase in crime, drug abuse, and insecurity throughout Nigeria.
This statement was conveyed by his representative, Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu, during the launch of The Hustle Reality Show, titled "Buge-Buge," which was organized by Search for Common Ground in Sokoto.
The Sultan emphasized that ongoing investment in youth empowerment, particularly through skill development, entrepreneurship, and mentorship, is vital for achieving national peace and stability. He highlighted that idle and disillusioned youths are more likely to engage in criminal activities and various forms of social vices.
He remarked that empowering young people constitutes not only a societal duty but also a crucial investment in the nation’s future.
"We must not leave any stone unturned. When youths are overlooked, the repercussions impact the entire community. However, when they are actively engaged, they transform into advocates for peace, productivity, and national growth," he stated.
Additionally, the Sultan called on traditional institutions, government entities, and community leaders to take proactive measures in creating opportunities that allow young individuals to become self-sufficient and constructive members of society.
He added, "Equipping our youths to support themselves is among the most effective strategies to ensure their future and fortify the nation as a whole."
The Deputy Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Idris Muhammad Gobir, who was represented by the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Dr. Abubakar Muhammad Zayyana, spoke at the event. He described the initiative as timely and aligned with Governor Ahmad Aliyu’s nine-point agenda for youth empowerment.
He stated that the project has significant potential to bolster security, stimulate economic growth, and minimize unemployment within the state, emphasizing that empowering the youth remains a crucial strategy to combat insecurity.
"This project is directly and indirectly influencing the lives and progression of our state, especially in terms of security, economic stability, and youth development," he remarked.
However, the deputy governor expressed concern regarding the limited engagement of beneficiaries from Sokoto State, with only 12 youths being selected despite a population of about 1.8 million.
He urged the organizers to broaden the program to accommodate more youths, asserting that increased participation would further foster peace and stability in the North-West region.
Earlier, the Country Director for Lake Chad Basin, Mr. Ouattara About Karno, mentioned that the initiative aims to tackle the root causes of poverty, unemployment, and social challenges across Sokoto, Katsina, and Zamfara states.
He indicated that the selected participants would receive financial grants, mentorship, and business development support to help transform innovative concepts into viable businesses.
Karno announced that 36 youths across the three states would benefit from this initiative, which is also intended to help reshape negative perceptions of young people in the North-West.
He praised the United Nations delegation to Nigeria and other development partners for their unwavering support and encouraged beneficiaries to make the most of the opportunities to create positive changes in their communities.
