A devastating incident in India's Andhra Pradesh state has resulted in the drowning deaths of three teenage girls. The girls, who were part of a group of four friends from Jambuvalasa village, had gone for an outing to the Mulagummi waterfall located in the Ananthagiri hills, a picturesque but remote area near Visakhapatnam.
The tragic event unfolded on Thursday, April 9, when the young women decided to film a video near the waterfall. Three of the girls entered a shallow section of the water, while the fourth friend stood on the bank, capturing footage of their activities. In the video, the girls are seen laughing and enjoying themselves. However, the situation took a terrifying turn when one girl ventured slightly further out and suddenly disappeared beneath the water. Her friends immediately moved to assist her, but they too were overcome by the water and submerged.
According to police reports, the girls were standing on slippery rocks near the waterfall's edge when they lost their footing. Officials noted that none of the girls were able to swim, which significantly worsened their predicament as they were caught by the water's current. The friend who was filming reportedly rushed into the water in an attempt to help her friends, screaming for assistance, before the camera's focus shifted away from the scene.
Local residents who heard the cries for help quickly arrived at the location. They managed to rescue one of the girls, who was subsequently taken to a hospital for medical attention. Unfortunately, despite the swift response from the community, the other three girls—identified as Trisha, aged 17, Ratnakumari, aged 16, and Pavitra, also aged 16—could not be saved.
Emergency services, including police teams, were dispatched to the scene. They successfully recovered the bodies of the three deceased girls. Authorities have since issued warnings about the dangers of the area, emphasizing that while the waterfall may appear serene, the surrounding terrain is exceptionally slippery, and the water currents can be deceptively powerful, posing a significant risk to visitors.
