Nigerian vocalist Temilade Openiyi, widely recognized as Tems, has publicly shared her candid views on marital commitment, sparking considerable discussion.
During a recent conversation with media personality Angie Martinez, the Grammy Award winner expressed her conviction that marriage should not solely rest on fleeting emotions.
She articulated that marriage ought to serve as a catalyst for personal development and improvement, rather than being a decision driven purely by sentiment.
Tems elaborated that she views marriage as a journey that inevitably involves challenges, and individuals should approach it with this understanding.
Furthermore, the artist made it unequivocally clear that having a partner who fears God is a fundamental requirement for her.
"My partner has to be a God-fearing man. Because why would you truly love me if you don’t have anyone that you answer to?" she queried.
"If you’re not accountable to anyone, how could you choose to love and keep loving me for the rest of our lives?"
She further probed the concept of commitment in the absence of accountability.
"If you’re the god of your life, why would you love me forever? You could just discard me anytime you want," she added.
According to Tems, the essence of marriage extends beyond mere affection, encompassing compatibility and individual growth.
"But marriage is something that makes you better as a human being. It should. It shouldn’t be about only love, it’s about compatibility. It’s about whether a relationship makes you a better person… because marriage is a whole another level, it’s supposed to bring out the hard times," she stated.
