The 2026 edition of the Lagos Fanti Carnival transformed Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) on Lagos Island into a lively centre of culture, colour, and festivity on Easter Monday, April 6th.

This community-focused festival, which was free to attend, attracted thousands of revellers, tourists, cultural troupes, and notable figures. Organisers described it as "Africa’s biggest Afro-Brazilian street experience."

The Fanti Carnival, observed annually, possesses deep historical ties to Lagos, originating in the 19th century when formerly enslaved Africans, known as Afro-Brazilian returnees or Aguda, settled in the city after their return from Brazil.

These returnees brought with them a blend of Brazilian and Yoruba traditions, encompassing architecture, culinary arts, music, and carnival-style celebrations. Currently, seven historical Fanti communities on Lagos Island, including Campos, Lafiaji, Okoo-Faji (Olowogbowo), Okepopo, and Isale-Eko, are instrumental in preserving this legacy and leading the annual processions.

This year's theme, “A Homecoming of Heritage,” underscored a renewed focus on cultural identity, tourism, and strengthening the connections between Nigeria and Brazil. Building on the festival's resurgence in 2025, the 2026 event featured enhanced programming and participation. A preceding cultural and economic summit was held on April 2nd at Glover Memorial Hall.

The Fanti Carnival's return follows its significant revival, spearheaded by the state government, in April 2025. The event had faced a nearly decade-long absence of official state backing, with its last major appearance before this hiatus occurring around 2015–2016.

The streets resonated with local drumming, energetic dancing, and captivating displays, creating a spectacle that garnered considerable attention.

At the primary venue, the atmosphere remained lively throughout the day, dominated by live performances, traditional storytelling, and indigenous Yoruba musical presentations. Rhythms influenced by Samba also added an international flavour to the celebrations.
