The human mind, when ensnared by untruths, can easily fall prey to self- important delusions, causing individuals to form conceited views of themselves. When a self-assured individual perceives his actions as flawless, he tends to elevate his personal attributes to such heights that he finds it intolerable to accept even minor critiques from others. Consequently, he responds with anger and hostility to any honest effort by others to highlight his flaws. Acknowledging one's shortcomings is part of the human experience and failing to do so can exhibit a depth of immodesty, arrogance, and self- importance.
An innate, unconscious drive compels those with inflated self-regard to seek ways to assert their superiority over their peers. Many engage in pursuits not out of genuine interest, but rather to attract admiration or attention. Self- importance is essentially a mindset fueled by an exaggerated self-opinion, where those who possess this trait often prefer to surround themselves with flatterers, distancing themselves from more grounded individuals.
Material wealth is a common factor that unnecessarily inflates people's sense of worth. Those who succumb to self-importance often exhibit contempt for the less fortunate, driven by ignorance. While wealth is not inherently bad, it can lead individuals down a path of moral decay, sometimes robbing them of genuine happiness.
Likewise, the allure of political authority can be a breeding ground for arrogance among individuals positioned to affect the lives of others. This group includes judges, law enforcement, political leaders, and even educators and parents. Each of these roles carries the potential for either upholding justice or inflicting harm. Those in executive roles may abuse their power, leading to regrettable decisions that disregard the weight of their responsibilities.
The careless exercise of power is common among leaders who dominate as if the world were beneath them. It is critical to note that all powers, aside from Allah's (SWT), are simply contrived. Regardless of one's political standing, we share a common human fate; all of us are made of flesh and will return to the earth from whence we came, raising the question of what necessitates such arrogance. Pride is frowned upon by Allah (SWT), as highlighted in the Qur’an, which urges humility and warns against arrogance.
Similarly, knowledge can also be a source of pride. It is typically those with limited understanding who leverage their education to bolster a sense of superiority. Allah (SWT) reminds us in the Qur’an of the vastness of knowledge that remains to be discovered, indicating that true wisdom invites humility.
No attempt to articulate the complex traits of arrogance can be exhaustively covered in a short piece. Individuals characterized by self-righteousness may also succumb to envy, cruelty, and vindictiveness. A profound need to see others falter often dominates the mentality of the self-righteous. Such individuals may feel threatened by those who surpass them in various capabilities, leading to internal feelings of inadequacy and envy.
Wealth, knowledge, and power are significant facets of life, yet they should never blind an individual’s judgment or moral compass. Those who find themselves in possession of any, or all, of these attributes must strive to keep them in check with wisdom and integrity. As stated by the Prophet (SAW), “He will not enter paradise who possesses even an atom of pride.” Missing the chance for eternal happiness is too great a risk.
The consequences of arrogance include the barriers it creates in communication and relationships. We must self-reflect and determine if we identify with the traits of arrogance described earlier.
Islam encourages us to avoid imitating those who are condescending and to embrace those who remain humble, grateful for Allah’s (SWT) mercies. May Allah inspire us to reject pride and steer clear of the company of the arrogant, guiding us instead to the path of righteousness, Amin.
