A severe road accident at Okunchi village on the Okene-Lokoja highway in Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi State has claimed three lives. The incident occurred when a tanker loaded with diesel collided with a trailer.
According to witnesses, the collision took place on Thursday at approximately 8:30 PM when an articulated truck lost control and crashed into another vehicle coming from the opposite direction.
Residents reported that the force of the impact ignited a fire that consumed both vehicles and spread to nearby structures, leading to significant destruction.
Momo Jimoh Ahmed, a local resident, stated, "Three occupants of the tanker were burnt beyond recognition. The fire also destroyed a residential building and a mosque nearby."
A couple on a motorcycle entered the scene shortly after the crash, losing control due to the diesel spill. The husband died at the scene, while his wife sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving medical care at a hospital in Okengwe.
Mr. Tenimu Yusuf Etuku, the Kogi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the tragedy on Sunday. He reported that three individuals died and two others sustained severe injuries in the incident.
Etuku identified the tanker involved as having a registration number T-20638LA, while the trailer from Mangal company did not have a visible registration number. He indicated that brake failure was the cause of the crash and informed that the injured parties and the deceased were transported to the General Hospital in Okengwe for treatment and autopsy.
