Golf legend Tiger Woods has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence following a car crash in Florida, officials have confirmed.
According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, Woods exhibited indications of impairment after a two-vehicle collision that occurred Friday afternoon near his residence on Jupiter Island.
Sheriff John M. Budensiek stated that law enforcement officers arrived at the scene shortly after the crash and assessed the golfer's condition before administering roadside sobriety tests.
Authorities reported that Woods attempted to pass a pressure-cleaner truck on a two-lane road but ended up striking the rear of the truck's trailer while attempting to avoid a more serious collision. His Land Rover subsequently overturned onto its side. Woods managed to exit the vehicle through the passenger side.
Neither Woods nor the driver of the truck sustained any injuries in the incident.
While a breathalyser test conducted at the scene yielded a negative result, Woods declined to provide a urine sample. He was subsequently taken into custody and transported to jail, where he is mandated to remain for a minimum of eight hours.
He has been formally charged with driving under the influence with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test, with both charges classified as misdemeanours.
This event marks the latest in a series of driving-related incidents involving Woods. He was previously involved in a severe crash in Los Angeles in 2021 that resulted in significant leg and ankle injuries. In 2017, he was also arrested on a DUI charge after being found asleep at the wheel of his car, later pleading guilty to reckless driving.
The 50-year-old, who boasts 15 major championship titles and 82 PGA Tour victories – a record he shares with Sam Snead – has been in the process of recovering from multiple injuries, including a ruptured Achilles tendon in 2025 and recent back surgery.
Woods has not participated in regular competitions since The Open Championship in 2024 and has yet to announce his participation in the upcoming Masters tournament in April.
Beyond his playing career, he maintains a significant influence in the sport, holding the position of chairman for the PGA Tour’s Future Competition Committee and considering a potential role as captain for the US Ryder Cup team in 2027.
