The Martin County Sheriff's Office has made public the initial bodycam footage capturing the arrest of renowned golf player Tiger Woods following a DUI incident. Woods, aged 50, was apprehended after his SUV overturned on Friday, March 27, as he was reportedly attempting to overtake another vehicle at a high speed on Jupiter Island. Deputies discovered two opioid pills in his possession at the time of his arrest.
The released video shows Woods on one knee at the side of the road, appearing unsteady. He explained to an officer that he looked at his phone just before the incident, which led to him clipping the back of a pressure washer trailer and his Range Rover rolling onto its side.
During medical checks, an officer inquired if the golfer was comfortable, to which Woods responded affirmatively. While being transported to the police station in the back of a patrol car, Woods was observed yawning frequently and appeared to briefly fall asleep.
Woods was charged with driving under the influence, property damage, and refusing to submit to a lawful test. The affidavit stated that Woods was observed to be 'limping and stumbling' during field sobriety tests, after which he was deemed unfit to operate his vehicle.
Sheriff John Budensiek of Martin County noted that Woods was traveling at high speeds on a residential road and exhibited 'signs of impairment.' Investigators believe he may have consumed medication or drugs. The Sheriff described Woods as lethargic and confirmed that while Woods agreed to a breathalyzer test which indicated no alcohol, he refused a urine test, leading to his arrest.
Budensiek further elaborated that Woods was traveling on a two-lane road with a 30mph speed limit when he attempted to pass a pressure cleaner truck. The exact speed at which Woods was travelling could not be determined by authorities. The Sheriff explained that Woods' vehicle swerved to avoid a collision while passing the truck but made contact with the rear of the truck's trailer, causing his car to overturn onto its side. Woods then exited the vehicle on his own.
The sheriff characterized Woods as 'cooperative, but he's not trying to incriminate himself.' He added that Woods had the right to refuse the urine test, and consequently, authorities would not be able to obtain definitive results regarding the substances he might have been impaired by.
