President Bola Tinubu recently met with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer during his two-day state visit to the United Kingdom. The discussions primarily focused on enhancing trade relations, defense cooperation, and significant investment agreements between the two nations.
At the iconic black door of 10 Downing Street, Starmer greeted Tinubu with a handshake, as both leaders posed for photographs before entering the premises.
Prior to Tinubu's visit, the Nigerian presidency announced that their meeting would feature extensive bilateral dialogues and a working lunch.
It is uncertain whether President Tinubu, currently observing the Muslim Ramadan fast, will partake in the meal, especially after the scheduled lunch with King Charles III at Windsor Castle was canceled in consideration of the fast.
Bayo Onanuga, a spokesperson for the president, indicated that the meeting would lead to the signing of multiple memoranda of understanding (MoU) and agreements across various sectors including trade, investment, defense, and cultural collaboration.
Furthermore, Tinubu is expected to witness the signing of a £746 million financing contract, facilitated by UK Export Finance (UKEF), which will benefit the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and the finance ministry to assist in refurbishing the Lagos Port Complex (Apapa Quays) and the Tin Can Island Port Complex.
This marks another interaction between the two leaders, with their previous engagements highlighting the ongoing commitment to improving relations.
In July 2024, Tinubu expressed his congratulations to Starmer and the Labour Party for their victory in the UK elections. The two subsequently maintained communication, reaffirming their dedication to enhancing their partnership as Commonwealth allies. Their relationship continued to develop with discreet discussions held at 10 Downing Street in October of the same year.
