Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, asserts that President Bola Tinubu has shielded Nigeria from a global fuel crisis, which has been exacerbated by conflicts in the Middle East, despite the significant rise in fuel prices.

According to reports, global fuel costs have surged following the blockade at the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial 30-mile shipping lane linking Iran and Oman.

This vital passage connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and is pivotal for global oil transport, accounting for approximately 20% of daily liquid petroleum consumption worldwide.

In the wake of hostilities initiated by Israel and the United States against Iran, Iranian forces have retaliated by preventing vessels from traversing this key route.

During a recent visit from the City Boy Movement at the Government House in Owerri, Uzodimma remarked that Tinubu's earlier interventions had staved off shortages and price escalations in domestic fuel, despite the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Governor Hope Uzodimma speaking about President Tinubu's interventions regarding fuel pricing.

He pointed out that while the region faces tumultuous conditions, the naira remains stable at 1,240 against the dollar, contrasting sharply with the fluctuation experienced by other African currencies.

Uzodimma emphasized, "When the President took office in 2023, the country was on the brink of decay. In light of the escalating tensions in the Middle East due to the situation in Iran, Nigeria’s fuel prices could have skyrocketed. However, the naira has maintained its value in a continent where many currencies have faced severe instability."

He also stated that the exchange rates for both the U.S. dollar and the South African rand have risen, whereas in Nigeria, the stability of the exchange rate at 1,240 is due to the removal of fuel subsidies.

He praised the subsidy abolition for helping to stabilize the currency and facilitating the purchase of crude by the Dangote Refinery using naira.

According to Uzodimma, the international community is beginning to recognize Nigeria's economic recovery and has called for collective efforts to maintain this positive direction.

In his address to a delegation from the City Boy Movement, led by its Patron, Mr. Seyi Tinubu, alongside the Minister of Youth Development, Mr. Ayodele Olawande, the Governor referred to their gathering as a “homecoming.”

Uzodimma described the initiative as a “new mentality” aimed at preparing Nigeria's youth for future leadership roles.

He commended the group for their charitable efforts, assisting the sick and vulnerable in hospitals.

The Governor also noted the considerable improvements in infrastructure and political stability within the South-East region.

He encouraged the delegation to act as ambassadors of “Renewed Hope,” ensuring that Tinubu’s progressive achievements resonate within both rural and urban areas.

Uzodimma promised comprehensive support for the youth movement.

Earlier, Olawande expressed gratitude to Uzodimma for his support of the Renewed Hope Initiative and various youth initiatives within the state.

He called for continued backing to align with the mission of the movement.

Reports indicate that as a symbolic gesture during their visit to the South- East, the movement is set to empower 7,000 youths this Saturday.
