On Saturday, key political leaders, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former President Goodluck Jonathan, and Labour Party’s Peter Obi, attended the funeral of the late Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, in Ofoni, Sagbama Local Government Area.
Ewhrudjakpo, who passed away on December 11, 2025, at the age of 60, was laid to rest amid a somber atmosphere in the state.
President Tinubu, represented by Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, expressed that the passing of Ewhrudjakpo was a significant loss to both the state and the nation, highlighting his remarkable contributions during his lifetime.
He articulated that Ewhrudjakpo had left a lasting legacy and would be remembered kindly by future generations.
In extending his condolences to the Ewhrudjakpo family as well as the people of Bayelsa, Tinubu encouraged them to find comfort in the fact that the late deputy governor lived a commendable life.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan, in his address, lamented the loss, calling it a difficult reality to accept. He emphasized the importance of giving thanks to God, in accordance with Christian teachings, despite the deep sorrow of losing such a valued leader.
Jonathan praised Ewhrudjakpo, noting that it is uncommon for a politician in a high-ranking position to be so universally respected and admired.
Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, acknowledged the harsh truth of losing his deputy but stated that the divine reasons behind his passing are beyond questioning.
During his sermon, Most Rev. Hyacinth Egbebo, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Bomadi, urged attendees to not mourn as those without hope. He encouraged Christians to focus on their faith in Jesus Christ and embrace the values of humility and generosity that Ewhrudjakpo exemplified throughout his life, suggesting he should serve as a role model for other politicians.
