Tom Noonan, the esteemed actor recognized for his roles in "RoboCop 2" and "Last Action Hero," has passed away at the age of 74.
The heart-wrenching news was delivered by Karen Sillas, his co-star from "What Happened Was," on Wednesday, February 18.
Sillas confirmed that Noonan died peacefully on Saturday, February 14. The specific cause of death has not been disclosed.
In a poignant Instagram tribute, Sillas wrote, "My dear friend and co-star, Tom Noonan passed peacefully on Valentine’s Day 2026."
Reflecting on their collaboration in his original Off-Broadway play "What Happened Was…" at the Paradise Factory Theatre in the early '90s, Sillas noted that it was a significant milestone in her career that still influences her work today.
Sillas, 62, characterized their 1994 film version of "What Happened Was" as one of the "most iconic Indies in American cinema," honoring her late friend and his enduring legacy.
She expressed, "What a privilege and crazy fun it was working with this man and calling him my friend to the end… may his legacy continue to shine on."
Born in Greenwich, Connecticut, in 1951, Noonan began his career in theater, featuring in the original Off-Broadway production of Sam Shepard’s acclaimed play "Buried Child" in 1978.
He made his film debut in 1980 with the comedy-drama "Willie & Phil," later appearing in "Gloria" and "Heaven's Gate" that same year.
Noonan's breakout role came in 1986 when he portrayed the primary antagonist, Francis Dolarhyde, in the gripping thriller "Manhunter," starring opposite William Petersen's FBI Agent Will Graham.
The following year, Noonan took on the role of Frankenstein’s monster in the horror-comedy "The Monster Squad."
In a testament to Noonan's talent, director Fred Dekker remembered him as "a highlight of my modest filmography."
“He was the quintessential gentleman and scholar, and the world has truly lost a remarkable talent,” Dekker expressed in a Facebook tribute. “R.I.P. Tom. Thank you for the great memories.”
After solidifying his reputation as the ideal antagonist in both "Manhunter" and "The Monster Squad," Noonan was cast as Cain in Irvin Kershner’s "RoboCop 2" in 1990.
This sci-fi action sequel saw Peter Weller reprise his role as the titular RoboCop.
In this sequel, Noonan portrayed both the leader of the Nuke drug cartel and later took on the persona of RoboCop 2 himself.
Three years later, he appeared as another villain, the Ripper, opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Detective Jack Slater in the 1993 film "Last Action Hero."
Following his directorial debut with "What Happened Was" in 1994, Noonan continued to make appearances in films such as "Heat" (1995), "Eight Legged Freaks" (2002), and "Synecdoche, New York" (2008).
His last film role came in the Todd Haynes-directed mystery drama "Wonderstruck" in 2017.
