The nation of Bangladesh is mourning after a grievous incident where a passenger bus, transporting around 40 individuals, plunged into a river, leading to the loss of at least 24 lives.
Authorities have confirmed that the fatalities occurred when a bus toppled into the Padma River while trying to board a ferry in Rajbari district, roughly 100 kilometers from the capital, Dhaka.
The tragic event took place on Wednesday at Daulatdia when the bus driver reportedly lost control as they approached the ferry ramp, causing the vehicle to overturn and submerge nearly 30 feet into the water, as stated by police and fire officials.
Rescue teams successfully retrieved 22 bodies from the submerged bus, which included six men, 11 women, and five children. Two additional women later succumbed to their injuries after being rescued from the river, raising the total death toll to 24.
Emergency response efforts featured four fire service units and ten divers, bolstered by assistance from the army, local police, the coast guard, and other local authorities as they continued searching for additional victims.
Officials have indicated that there may still be missing passengers as the search operation persists. This tragedy underscores ongoing safety issues, as numerous individuals perish each year in road and ferry disasters throughout Bangladesh.
