A tragic road accident along the Damaturu–Maiduguri highway in Yobe State has resulted in the death of five individuals from the same family.
The incident, which took place on Wednesday, has cast a shadow of grief over the community of Potiskum Local Government Area.
Dahiru Musa Talba, a relative of the deceased, shared the details via a Facebook post, indicating that in addition to the five lives lost, three other family members sustained various injuries in the crash.
The injured individuals were promptly taken to the General Hospital in Damaturu, where they are currently receiving medical care.
Expressing his sorrow, Talba stated, "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. My mom has died," reflecting the family's profound loss. He further noted that the accident occurred on the heavily trafficked Damaturu–Maiduguri highway.
Yobe State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, confirmed the incident, stating that five people were pronounced dead and others injured. An investigation has been initiated to determine the circumstances leading to the crash.
The deceased individuals have been identified as Hajjagana Dahiru Zayi, Ibrahim Dahiru Zayi, Muhammad Dahiru Zayi, Hauwa Dahiru Zayi, among others.
Community members voiced their heartbreak over the tragedy and urged drivers to exercise caution on the road to prevent future accidents.
Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, extended his condolences to the victims' father, Alhaji Mohammad Dahiru Zayi. In a statement signed by Malam Mamman Muhammad, the Director-General of Press and Media Affairs to the Governor, Buni expressed profound sadness at the news, labeling the incident as “terrifying, tragic, and devastating.”
The governor remarked, “This is a sad, very unfortunate and trying moment for the family and the entire state,” and prayed for Allah to forgive the deceased and grant them eternal peace in Jannatul Firdaus.
He emphasized the unimaginable nature of losing five family members in a single accident, affirming that as believers, the loss represents their appointed time. Governor Buni also prayed for the bereaved family to find strength to cope with their irreparable loss.
