Two individuals tragically lost their lives in an accident while traveling to attend the funeral of the late Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.
The unfortunate event took place on Friday along the Toru-Orua section of the Sagbama/Ekeremor road in Bayelsa State.
Witnesses informed Daily Trust that an 18-seater bus transporting mourners to the service in the Ofoni community collided with another vehicle, resulting in two fatalities and injuries to several others.
Bayelsa State's Commissioner for Health, Professor Seiyefa Brisibe, confirmed the deaths, stating that the injured individuals are currently receiving emergency treatment at a nearby hospital.
The police spokesperson in the state, DSP Musa Muhammad, also verified the incident but indicated that details regarding the fatalities were still being confirmed.
He mentioned that the state’s Commissioner of Police had dispatched officers to the scene to provide assistance and ensure order during the rescue operations.
Senator Ewhrudjakpo, who passed away after collapsing on December 11, 2025, was buried on the day of the accident.
