A grievous event unfolded at a hospital in Alabama where a new mother was tragically shot by her husband just after delivering their first child, before the husband subsequently took his own life.
As reported by WVTM, the coroner's office revealed that 24-year-old Precious Johnson was shot multiple times by her husband, identified as 19-year-old Kynath Terry Jr., within moments of the birth. Following the assault, the suspect allegedly turned the weapon on himself.
The Homewood Police Department released a statement on March 2, 2026, indicating that the incident occurred around 9:25 p.m. on Sunday at the Women's Center of Brookwood Hospital in Homewood, Alabama.
Law enforcement officials arrived at the scene to discover both individuals deceased due to gunshot injuries. Authorities confirmed that the woman was a patient at the hospital and noted that no other individuals were harmed during the incident.
The police statement suggested that initial investigations indicate the tragic incident appears to be a domestic murder-suicide.
In an interview, Terry's mother disclosed that the couple had been experiencing marital difficulties, highlighting that Johnson had expressed a desire for Terry’s family to not be present at the hospital during her childbirth.
She further mentioned her son had recently completed training in the Army National Guard. The president of the Alabama Hospital Association remarked that he had never encountered a shooting of this nature during his tenure representing hospitals in the state.
“This is a sad occurrence. However, I stress that this was an isolated case. In my three decades of experience, I have never witnessed anything like this,” Howard stated, adding that the event could prompt a reevaluation of security measures.
He continued, saying, “It is common for hospitals to conduct after-action reports to ascertain lessons learned, what went smoothly, and what may require adjustments. We often convene with all our hospitals to share insights on effective practices.”
Although hospital leaders refrained from commenting on camera or addressing inquiries related to security, Howard pointed out that there are currently no security mandates governing hospitals in Alabama.
Homewood's Mayor, Jennifer Andress, stated that the investigation remains ongoing. In a statement regarding the incident, she conveyed, "Our police department reacted promptly to a tragic shooting at Brookwood Hospital, securing the area and ensuring community safety. This remains an active investigation, and we will provide updates as needed. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family, the hospital personnel, and all affected.”
