A heartbreaking incident occurred over the weekend when two young boys died after falling into the icy waters of a creek in Oklahoma.

The victims, identified as Talon Whinery, aged 8, and 9-year-old Emmett Bennett, fell through the ice of Bird Creek in Avant on the evening of February 7, as reported by Newson6.

Authorities were alerted to the situation shortly after 7:13 p.m. when a call came in stating that one of the boys had been located in the water near the creek's edge, according to the Osage County Sheriff’s Office.

First responders pulled the boy from the water and attempted lifesaving procedures; however, he was declared dead at the scene.

The search for the second boy continued for several hours, utilizing ground teams, drones, and a specialized rescue boat. Unfortunately, he was later found deceased, police confirmed.

While the police have not officially released the identities of the boys, family members mentioned that Whinery had been rescued from the creek by his uncle and grandfather, according to a GoFundMe campaign set up for funeral expenses.

A statement on the crowdfunding page expressed deep grief, stating, “His grandpa and his uncle found him, pulled him out of Bird Creek, and immediately began CPR, but our baby boy was not responsive and was pronounced dead at the scene. Our hearts are shattered and it feels unreal.”

The GoFundMe for Bennett’s family also indicated that he “drowned in a creek near their home.”

The fundraiser emphasized, “Their world has been turned upside down, and they are facing a pain no parent should ever have to endure,” addressing the heartbreaking situation of Bennett’s parents, Lance and Kendra.

Emmett’s aunt, Angela Randolph, recalled the anxious search for her nephew, stating, “We wanted to look through the woods. They wouldn’t let us. I understand. They thought he was in the water. We thought maybe he couldn’t be in the water, just scared because he saw his friend. So we had really high hopes.”

Randolph expressed her struggle to process the tragedy, saying, “I don’t know how to move forward yet. I don’t know how to help my sister and brother-in-law do that. I wish I could take their pain away.”

The Osage County Sheriff’s Office released a statement urging residents to avoid walking or playing on frozen bodies of water, no matter how solid they may seem.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the families of the victims and the broader Avant community during this unimaginable loss. Incidents involving children present some of the most challenging situations for first responders, and this tragedy has profoundly affected all involved,” the statement read.

The sheriff’s office continued to caution, “As winter conditions persist, we encourage the public to refrain from venturing onto frozen water bodies. Ice can be unpredictable and immensely perilous, even when it appears to be solid.”

An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
