On Thursday, February 12, a tragic shooting unfolded at South Carolina State University, leading to the loss of two lives while at least one other person suffered injuries.
The university acknowledged the occurrence in an official statement, indicating that the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has taken charge of the investigation into the incident.
As of now, the names of the deceased and the status of the injured individual remain undisclosed.
A lockdown of the campus was implemented around 9:15 p.m. on Thursday following reports of gunfire from an apartment at the Hugine Suites, which is part of the student housing complex.
As of 1 a.m. Friday, the campus continued to be under lockdown.
Support is being provided by the Orangeburg Department of Public Safety and the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office in monitoring activities both on the university grounds and in the adjacent areas.
The university has announced the cancellation of classes for Friday and is offering counseling services to students in light of the incident.
