Marius Borg Hoiby, the son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway, is currently facing legal proceedings on charges related to rape.
Hoiby, who is 29 years old and was born from Mette-Marit's relationship prior to her marriage to Crown Prince Haakon, has been accused of 38 charges, some of which trace back to incidents that occurred in 2018.
If the Oslo district court finds him guilty, he could be sentenced to a maximum of 16 years in prison. The trial, which will continue until March 19, is poised to attract considerable media scrutiny.
Trond Noren Isaksen, a historian and monarchy expert, commented to Agence France-Presse (AFP), stating, "This is undoubtedly the largest scandal in the history of the Norwegian royal family, which stretches back 120 years."
He further elaborated, stating that, while controversies have arisen over matters such as the choice of spouses and palace renovations, there has never been a significant scandal involving criminal offenses, particularly not of this magnitude.
Among the most serious charges against Hoiby are accusations related to four incidents of rape and the physical and emotional abuse of various former girlfriends.
So far, he has only acknowledged some of the less severe accusations.
The law firm representing Hoiby indicated to AFP that he is reserving his account of events for the court.
Hoiby was taken into custody on August 4, 2024, after being suspected of assaulting his girlfriend the previous night.
Following his arrest, he revealed that his actions were committed while he was under the influence of alcohol and cocaine, occurring after a dispute, and he has expressed having faced "mental troubles" as well as a prolonged struggle with substance misuse.
The investigation related to this incident subsequently revealed numerous other alleged offenses, including accusations of raping four women while they were either asleep or incapacitated due to alcohol, some of which he is believed to have recorded.
The alleged rapes reportedly took place in 2018, 2023, and 2024, with the most recent incident occurring after the initiation of the police investigation.
