The administration led by Donald Trump has initiated legal action against Harvard University, alleging breaches of civil rights legislation due to the institution's inability to adequately tackle antisemitism on its campus.

The US Justice Department presented the lawsuit in a federal court in Massachusetts on Friday, marking a significant intensification of the protracted conflict between the federal government and the prestigious university.

In the suit, the Justice Department asserted: "The United States cannot and will not tolerate these failures and brings this action to compel Harvard to comply" with federal civil rights regulations and to retrieve billions of taxpayer dollars allocated to what it terms a discriminatory institution.

This legal action arises from a wider investigation into antisemitism in educational institutions which has transpired into a substantial legal and political showdown. The Trump administration has previously reduced over $2.6 billion in research grants, ceased federal contracts, and attempted to prevent Harvard from enrolling international students.

Harvard has responded robustly, countering with its own lawsuits and contending that it is being unjustly singled out for opposing the administration's demands. A federal judge had previously ruled in favor of the university, overturning the funding cuts and characterizing the justification of antisemitism as a "smokescreen."

Despite sporadic negotiations, attempts to resolve the conflict have repeatedly faltered. Initial discussions had reportedly included a $500 million proposal from Harvard to regain funding access, but this amount escalated to $1 billion as tensions heightened.

The administration’s civil rights investigation concluded in June with an official statement that Harvard had allowed antisemitism to persist. A federal task force labeled the university as a "willful participant" in the harassment of Jewish students and faculty, threatening impending legal action if it did not comply.

Harvard has rejected these findings, asserting: "Antisemitism is a serious problem and unacceptable in any context."

The university further maintained: "Harvard has implemented significant and proactive measures to confront the underlying causes of antisemitism within its community."

Since his return to office, Trump has escalated scrutiny of elite universities, accusing them of endorsing leftist ideologies while neglecting to safeguard Jewish students. Several universities, including Columbia and Brown, have reached financial settlements with the administration to restore federal funding.

The lawsuit against Harvard now paves the way for a pivotal legal confrontation that could redefine federal influence over funding in US higher education.
