President Donald Trump has delivered strong criticism towards NATO allies, calling them 'cowards' as tensions escalate over the ongoing crisis in the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump's comments arise as Iran intensifies disruptions in the vital maritime corridor, which is responsible for approximately 20% of the world’s oil supply. The former president expressed discontent over allied nations' lack of support in securing the shipping route, particularly as they express concern over rising global oil prices.
He stated that reopening the strait would not be a complicated military task and accused NATO members of overly depending on the U.S. without making adequate contributions themselves.
Simultaneously, Iran’s leadership has been vocal, with Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the deceased Supreme Leader, reportedly calling for Iran to dismiss the security concerns of its adversaries as hostilities continue.
The situation has escalated with ongoing military confrontations among Iran, the United States, and Israel, including attacks targeting energy infrastructure like the South Pars gas field. These events have considerably raised global energy prices and heightened concerns about a prolonged conflict in the region.
While the UK and several European countries, including France and Germany, have expressed readiness to assist in securing maritime passages, there are currently no concrete plans to send naval escorts to the area.
In the meantime, the U.S. is reportedly contemplating bolder measures, including targeting critical Iranian oil facilities, such as Kharg Island, a strategy that analysts warn could lead to a significant escalation of the conflict.
Despite the tension, the UK government has maintained its stance of avoiding a broader military engagement, while still coordinating with allies on security preparations. This ongoing situation highlights the strategic significance of the Strait of Hormuz and the wider implications for global energy markets amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
