US President Donald Trump has revealed that he will not be attending the 2026 Super Bowl, stating that he is not pleased with the event's entertainment lineup, which features Bad Bunny and Green Day, as a significant factor in his decision.
In remarks made to the New York Post, Trump explained his reasons for skipping this year's NFL highlight, despite having made history in 2025 as the first sitting president to participate in a Super Bowl. Initially, he mentioned distance as a consideration, but then directly criticized the chosen performers for the halftime and opening events.
Regarding the artists, Trump remarked, "I’m anti-them. I think it’s a terrible choice. All it does is sow hatred. Terrible." Bad Bunny is scheduled to perform at the halftime show, while Green Day is set to lead the opening ceremony.
The former president has previously expressed bewilderment over Bad Bunny being selected. Last year, he commented, "I’ve never heard of him… I don’t know who he is. I don’t understand why they're doing it. It’s crazy. And then they put the blame on some promoter they hired to select entertainment. I think it’s absolutely ridiculous."
Bad Bunny, known as one of the most streamed musicians globally, has also voiced his political concerns in the US. Recently, the Puerto Rican artist announced he would be refraining from touring in the US, citing fears of targeting by immigration enforcement at events. His influence continues to grow both musically and in social issues.
On the other hand, Green Day is a long-established American rock band recognized for their consistent criticism of Trump and the Republican Party. Their songs such as "American Idiot" and "Jesus of Suburbia" are well-known for their anti-establishment themes, frequently placing the band at odds with conservative leaders.
Trump's announcement represents a notable change from last year, when his presence at the Super Bowl garnered significant media attention. With the 2026 Super Bowl on the horizon, the president's remarks have introduced a political dimension to an event that is typically one of the largest sporting and entertainment occasions in the United States.
The NFL has not issued a response to Trump's comments, and event organizers are continuing to prepare for the Super Bowl, with Bad Bunny and Green Day remaining key figures in the lineup.
