U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated that once the United States concludes its focus on the ongoing issues with Iran, attention could soon shift to Cuba, a nation already enduring intense economic pressures from the U.S.
While speaking at a reception at the White House, Trump noted that the situation with Iran remains the top priority but suggested that actions regarding Cuba are on the horizon. He stated, "We want to fix, finish this one first — but that will be just a question of time before you and a lot of unbelievable people are going to be going back to Cuba," while addressing guests including U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Trump expressed commendation for Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants from Miami, stating he has performed an “outstanding job” concerning Cuba.
The United States has intensified economic sanctions against Cuba, which has included reducing oil supplies from Venezuela, leading to a significant downturn in Cuba's fuel availability. This situation has forced airlines to cut back on flights and has deepened the country’s energy crisis.
Observers interpret Trump’s remarks as part of a larger strategy aimed at boosting U.S. influence in Latin America. Cuba has been grappling with a severe energy deficit as U.S. sanctions have disrupted foreign oil imports, resulting in widespread power outages and economic difficulties for the nation.
Previously, both Trump and Rubio have indicated a desire for political transformation in Havana, and recent comments have sparked speculation about Cuba becoming a significant area of focus in U.S. foreign policy once the Iranian situation is resolved.
