Donald Trump controversially likened US military strikes targeting Iran to the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor during a Thursday meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in Washington.

Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump defended the military operation against Tehran by referencing Japan's World War Two surprise assault. "We wanted surprise. Who knows better about surprise than Japan? Why didn’t you tell me about Pearl Harbor?" Trump asked a journalist inquiring about the lack of notification to allies regarding his war plans. "You believe in surprise, I think much more so than us."

Prime Minister Takaichi's expression visibly changed, with her eyes widening and her posture shifting as Trump, seated beside her, recalled the event that propelled the United States into World War II. The Japanese assault on the US naval base at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, resulted in the deaths of 2,390 Americans and led to the US declaring war the subsequent day. At the time, US President Franklin D. Roosevelt famously characterized the event as "a date which will live in infamy."

The war concluded in August 1945 following the US atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which caused hundreds of thousands of civilian casualties and ultimately led to Japan's surrender.
