A coordinated operation conducted by the Inspector General of Police's Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team, alongside the Surveillance Unit from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), has led to the arrest of twelve Nigerians suspected of involvement in organized cyber fraud and human trafficking activities.
According to a statement from the Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team issued on Friday, there are six more suspected Nigerian nationals who are currently evading capture for immigration-related offenses that violate Ghanaian laws.
The operation took place on Thursday, March 12, 2026, under the leadership of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Malaika Jibril Alhassan from the Police Headquarters and Superintendent Francis Baidoo from the Amasaman Sector Command of GIS.
Authorities discovered various suspected tools for cybercrime during a search of the premises, which included twenty-five laptops and seven mobile phones.
During the enforcement action, the suspects attempted to hinder the process by using German Shepherd dogs against law enforcement personnel.
Reinforcements from the Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team and the CID's Surveillance Unit were called in to facilitate the successful completion of the operation.
Initial investigations have revealed that the suspects were engaging in several criminal activities, including Internet Fraud (Online Scams), Identity Theft, Email and Phishing Fraud, Mobile Money (MoMo) Fraud, Cyber Extortion and Blackmail, as well as Credit Card and ATM Fraud, and Electronic Forgery.
These offenses are governed by several legal frameworks:
• Ghana Immigration Service Regulations (L.I. 2245)
• Cybersecurity Act, 2020 (Act 1038)
• Electronic Transactions Act, 2008 (Act 772)
• Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29)
• Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843)
The statement emphasized the increasing connection between cybercrime networks and cross-border migration activities.
It reiterated the importance of effective intelligence gathering and collaboration between the Ghana Police Service and GIS to dismantle such criminal syndicates.
The Ghana Police Service affirmed its dedication to intelligence-driven operations, inter-agency partnerships, and the rigorous application of the law to maintain national security and protect the integrity of Ghana's digital and migration ecosystems.
