Two Iranian men face charges in the United Kingdom for alleged espionage directed at locations and individuals associated with the Jewish community.
Nematollah Shahsavani, aged 40, and 22-year-old Alireza Farasati are accused of actions that are believed to have aided a foreign intelligence agency between the dates of July 9 and August 15 in the previous year, as stated by prosecutors. The Crown Prosecution Service has confirmed that these charges are connected to Iranian interests.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the two suspects were taken into custody on March 6 during an inquiry into suspected spying activities in London, including surveillance of sites linked to the Jewish community.
Both men, residents of North Finchley and Edgware in North London, are set to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court. Frank Ferguson, who heads the CPS Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division, remarked, “We have chosen to prosecute these two men under the National Security Act. The charge concerns activities in the UK that involve gathering information and conducting reconnaissance at specific targets.
“The foreign entity related to the charge is Iran. Our team has closely collaborated with the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command throughout the investigative process.”
Ferguson emphasized, “We remind all parties that these criminal proceedings are ongoing and that the defendants have the right to a fair trial. It is essential that no information is reported, commented upon, or shared online that could potentially bias these proceedings.”
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans underscored the gravity of the allegations, stating, “These charges under the National Security Act are extremely serious and stem from a complicated investigation. Since their arrest two weeks ago, detectives have been working tirelessly to compile and analyze the evidence, closely coordinating with CPS officials to reach this stage.
“We are aware that the public, particularly the Jewish community, may be concerned, but we hope this investigation assures them that we will take decisive action against any threats to their safety and will continue our relentless pursuit of potential offenders.
“Counter Terrorism Policing collaborates closely with local officers nationwide to ensure community safety. Any public concerns should be reported to local law enforcement or through national reporting channels.”
Additionally, police confirmed that two other individuals arrested during the same operation have been released without charge as investigations are ongoing.
