The Kwara State Fire Service has reported the recovery of two young men's bodies who drowned in a quarry lake situated in the Opete region of Asa Local Government Area.
The incident occurred on Monday evening, March 23, 2026.
Hassan Adekunle, the Public Relations Officer of the fire service, shared the information in a statement made to Punch on Tuesday.
According to Adekunle, firefighters received the alert at approximately 5:08 p.m., which led to their swift response at the location.
"The incident involved two young men who reportedly drowned while visiting the quarry site. When our team arrived, they commenced a recovery operation and were able to retrieve the victims’ bodies," Hassan noted.
The victims have been identified as Fatai Abdulraman, aged 26, and Muhammed Awal, aged 27.
The remains were handed over to Mallam Abdulfatahi for further arrangements.
The PRO emphasized the fire service's dedication to responding promptly to emergencies across the state.
In response to this unfortunate event, Alabi Muhammed, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, extended condolences to the families of the victims and emphasized the importance of avoiding unsafe water bodies, including quarry lakes.
"These quarry lakes often appear shallower than they actually are and can pose significant risks due to their unstable characteristics. It is imperative for the community to prioritize safety and avoid unnecessary dangers," he stated.
Muhammed also urged local residents to limit access to hazardous areas and to report emergencies without delay.
