The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced that it will not permit its territory, airspace, or waters to be utilized for any military actions directed at Iran. This declaration comes amidst rising international tensions and the potential for conflict.
In a communication disseminated via X on Monday, the UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs explicitly stated that the country would not offer any logistical support for such military endeavors. The ministry underscored the UAE's dedication to preventing its territory from becoming a staging ground for hostile operations.
The UAE reiterated its firm belief that dialogue, de-escalation, adherence to international law, and respect for the sovereignty of nations are the most effective pathways to resolving current crises. The statement highlighted the UAE's consistent approach of addressing disputes through diplomatic channels.
The UAE is a significant ally of the United States in the Middle East and hosts the Al Dhafra Air Base, which accommodates over 3,500 American military personnel. While other US allies in the region, such as Qatar and Saudi Arabia, are understood to share similar reservations regarding potential military action, their concerns have not been publicly disclosed.
Tensions between the US and Iran have escalated significantly in recent times, particularly following anti-government protests within Iran. These protests have seen a considerable number of casualties, with human rights organizations attributing the deaths to government forces, while Iran has accused external actors of instigating violence.
Earlier statements from the US administration indicated that all options, including military intervention, were being considered in response to the situation in Iran. This stance was met with strong warnings from Iran, which vowed retaliation against any form of attack.
Separately, reports indicated the arrival of the US aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and its escort vessels in the Indian Ocean, suggesting a heightened military posture in the region. The US administration has confirmed that naval forces are being moved towards the Middle East as Washington closely monitors developments.
