Ademola Lookman is the only Nigerian remaining in the UEFA Champions League, following the elimination of Victor Osimhen and Galatasaray in the Round of 16.
Galatasaray’s campaign came to a disappointing halt at Anfield, where Liverpool reversed a deficit from the first leg to achieve a commanding victory and advance to the quarter-finals. The Turkish team, having secured a 1–0 win in Istanbul, struggled significantly as Liverpool netted four goals to ensure their qualification.
Osimhen, a key player for Galatasaray, faced a challenging match. He was only able to complete the first half before being replaced by Leroy Sané due to concerns over an injury. This early substitution further diminished Galatasaray's offensive capabilities as Liverpool seized control.
In contrast, Lookman continues to progress in the tournament after aiding Atlético Madrid's advancement, despite their second-leg defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. Atlético Madrid moved forward on aggregate thanks to their impressive first-leg performance.
Lookman showcased his skills during the match, playing 64 minutes and providing an assist, although he received a yellow card in a physically intense game. His performance highlighted his increasing importance in Atlético's attacking line as they secured a place in the quarter-finals.
The quarter-final matchups have been set, featuring significant clashes. Atlético Madrid is set to face FC Barcelona in an all-Spanish duel, while Liverpool will encounter the defending champions, Paris Saint-Germain.
Now that Osimhen has exited the competition, Nigerian hopes hinge entirely on Lookman as he represents the nation's interests in the crucial stages of Europe's premier tournament.
Historically, three Nigerian players have lifted the UEFA Champions League trophy: Finidi George and Nwankwo Kanu with Ajax in 1994/95, and John Obi Mikel with Chelsea in 2011/12.
Lookman aims to further his journey with Atlético Madrid to eventually add his name to this prestigious group of Nigerian players who have Triumphed in the Champions League.
