Paul Onuachu and Chibuike Nwaiwu were the standout performers as Trabzonspor triumphed 2-1 over a Galatasaray side missing star striker Victor Osimhen in the Turkish SuperLig on Saturday.
In a significant match at the Papara Park, Trabzonspor delivered a dominant performance against the league leaders, breaking Galatasaray's unbeaten streak against them and boosting their own title aspirations. The Nigerian contingent played a pivotal role in securing the victory.
Onuachu opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a well-placed header into the far corner, marking his 22nd league goal of the season. The towering striker nearly extended Trabzonspor's lead before halftime, but his impressive solo effort was disallowed for offside.
Galatasaray managed to equalize three minutes into the second half, but Trabzonspor quickly reasserted their control. The winning goal came in the 62nd minute, originating from a Nigerian connection. Anthony Nwakaeme's precise free-kick found Nwaiwu, who powerfully headed the ball into the net for his third league goal since joining Trabzonspor from Austria in January.
Trabzonspor successfully defended their lead to secure all three points, marking their fifth consecutive home win and ending a nine-game winless run against Galatasaray. The victory sees them move to second place in the league table with 63 points, just one point behind Galatasaray, who have a game in hand.
Trabzonspor will now look to continue their strong form as they prepare to face Alanyaspor in their next league fixture, maintaining their pursuit of a league title last won in 2022.
