A second-year student enrolled at De Montfort University has tragically passed away after being stabbed during a violent altercation near the campus in Leicester, evoking a strong reaction of grief from both his family and the local community.
Khaleed Oladipo succumbed to his injuries after emergency services were summoned to the scene, which police characterized as a “very serious incident” located close to the university. Multiple ambulances, including an air ambulance, arrived in the city center to assist, and Oladipo was urgently transported to a hospital where he later died.
In a heartfelt statement relayed through the police, his family honored him as an “extremely loved” member.
“We are overwhelmed by sadness at the loss of Khaleed. He was a deeply cherished son, brother, uncle, boyfriend, and friend. Khaleed was a good person who had a great love for his family. He was currently in his second year of university, and we were immensely proud of him,” they stated.
The family noted that one of his lifelong passions was football, having played the sport since the age of four and being a devoted Arsenal supporter. They believe he was returning home to watch a football match on the evening he was fatally attacked.
“We are grateful to the bystanders who attempted to assist Khaleed, as well as the ambulance service and hospital personnel who went to great lengths to save him,” they added.
“We also wish to express our appreciation to the police for their ongoing work in the investigation to ensure the perpetrator faces justice. It is unfathomable to comprehend why anyone would commit such an act. While we realize that justice for Khaleed will not bring him back, we are determined to ensure he receives the justice he rightfully deserves.”
Originally from London, Oladipo had been residing in Leicester during his studies. Law enforcement officials reported that he was involved in an altercation prior to the stabbing, and the suspect had fled the scene before police arrived.
Leicestershire Police confirmed the arrest of an 18-year-old individual who is suspected of murder and is currently in custody. A post-mortem examination indicated that Oladipo died from a stab wound to the chest.
Earlier in the week, Katie Normington, Vice-Chancellor of De Montfort University, acknowledged that the victim was a student at the institution. “We are extending our thoughts to everyone affected by this tragic circumstance. We are providing direct support to students, staff, and the victim's family,” she asserted.
“We are collaborating with Leicestershire Police as they conduct their investigation into this significant incident. We appreciate the messages of support we have received from the Leicester community; it is a city that unites during such difficult times.”
The police have initiated a murder investigation and are actively appealing for witness testimonies or any information that may aid in their ongoing inquiries.
