Joani Reid has resigned from her role as the whip for the Labour Party while an internal investigation is underway regarding her husband's arrest on charges related to espionage for China.

Her spouse, David Taylor, is reportedly among three individuals detained by counter-terrorism officers on the grounds of providing assistance to foreign intelligence services. The other two arrested individuals, Steve Jones, aged 68, and Matthew Aplin, aged 43, were taken into custody during synchronized police actions.

All three men were subsequently released on bail as the investigation is still active. In a statement released on X, Reid announced that she had voluntarily chosen to suspend her membership from the party whip and would refrain from serving as a Labour MP until the inquiry is finalized.

"This week has been the most challenging of my life. The shock of recent events has been hard on me and my family," she stated. "I want to clarify that I am not under police investigation, and there have been no allegations made against me. I have not engaged in any wrongdoing."

Reid indicated that this decision was made following discussions with the party's leadership to prevent any distraction from the government's responsibilities under Keir Starmer.

"After discussions with the Chief Whip, I am voluntarily stepping back from my role this evening and will not serve as a Labour MP until the conclusion of the internal investigations," she said. "I and my team will continue to assist my constituents in the usual manner as their MP."

A spokesperson from the Labour Party confirmed Reid's commitment to fully cooperate with the ongoing internal investigation, emphasizing the seriousness of the allegations surrounding the arrests. "These are extremely serious matters. We cannot provide further comments while the police investigation is active," the spokesperson noted.

The arrests were part of a larger inquiry led by Counter Terrorism Policing London, during which searches were conducted at multiple locations in London, East Kilbride, and Cardiff. Previously, Reid had defended her husband, asserting that she had never noticed anything that would suggest he engaged in unlawful activity.

"I have never observed any indications that my husband has breached any laws," she asserted. She clarified that she had no involvement in her husband's professional dealings and denied any connections to Chinese interests.

"I have never traveled to China. I have never commented on China or its related issues in the Commons. I have never posed inquiries regarding China- related topics," she explained. "To my knowledge, I have not interacted with any Chinese businesses, diplomats, or government officials during my time as an MP."

Reid expressed her commitment to democratic principles and rejected any implications that she supports the Chinese government. "I am a social democrat who upholds freedom of speech, trade union liberties, and democratic elections. I do not endorse or defend the authoritarian practices of the Chinese Communist Party," she expressed.

Authorities have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, although police have stated there is currently no immediate threat to public safety.

Helen Flanagan, the commander of Counter Terrorism Policing London, articulated that the arrests were part of a strategic national security probe. "Today's arrests are part of a proactive investigation, and while these matters are serious, we currently do not perceive any imminent danger to the public," she stated.
