Keir Starmer, the British Prime Minister, has remarked on the fatal shooting of an American man by federal law enforcement in Minneapolis, calling the situation “concerning.”
The incident involved Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old nurse, who was shot and killed by US immigration officers during a protest on Saturday. Numerous videos that have emerged online depict officers firing at him as he lay on the ground.
This occurrence has led to widespread condemnation across the political divide in the United States and has sparked protests in Minneapolis. This unrest follows ongoing tensions due to aggressive enforcement tactics by heavily armed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol agents.
Starmer shared his thoughts with reporters while en route to an official visit to China, stating, “I haven’t seen all of the details, but what I have seen is obviously concerning.”
Reports indicate that Pretti was in possession of a firearm for which he had a valid permit; however, videos from the incident do not show him wielding the weapon at the time he was shot.
“I don’t think anybody could see some of the footage and not say it’s concerning,” Starmer continued, adding, “I’m not claiming to have seen all the footage and all the details, but based on what I have seen, I would definitely say it’s concerning.”
Pretti's death occurred less than three weeks after another tragic shooting incident in Minneapolis, where federal officers fatally shot Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, on January 7.
Following the public outcry over Pretti’s death and initial remarks from his administration that seemed to place blame on him, US President Donald Trump announced plans to “de-escalate a little bit” in the city.
Moreover, Trump has reportedly been in contact with local Democratic officials, and it has been indicated that some of the approximately 3,000 federal agents deployed to Minneapolis might be pulled back soon.
