António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, has sounded the alarm over the Middle East being 'pushed to breaking point.' He emphasized the impact of shipping attacks, increasing oil prices, and a growing humanitarian crisis during his remarks in Türkiye while receiving the Atatürk International Award for Peace. Guterres urged for an urgent ceasefire and a revival of diplomatic efforts to address the ongoing tensions in the region.

He remarked that all involved parties need to halt hostilities, adhere to international law, and safeguard civilians while swiftly returning to negotiations. He noted, “Around the world, we hear much talk of peace, but we see far too little of it.”

Further, he pointed out the alarming trends where international law is being disregarded, power politics are on the rise, and inequalities are expanding. Guterres also warned that emerging technologies like artificial intelligence could exacerbate violence instead of mitigating it, alongside skyrocketing military expenditure and a decline in life-saving aid.

The UN chief noted that civilians are disproportionately bearing the brunt of the conflict, as evidenced by escalating death rates and the devastation of communities.

He characterized the intense military actions by the United States and Israel, along with retaliatory attacks by Iran, as significant threats to global peace and security, while outlining the extensive suffering inflicted on local populations. Guterres concluded that the area is truly at a tipping point, emphasizing the broader global repercussions stemming from this crisis, such as disrupted trade and surging costs of energy and food.

“The most vulnerable are always the first to suffer and the worst impacted,” he remarked. He stressed that both the region and the international community require a decisive change in direction, reiterating that de-escalation and constructive dialogue are the only viable paths forward.

This trip to Türkiye forms part of Guterres’ annual gesture of solidarity with a Muslim nation during Ramadan. He expressed that such visits embody the essence of Islam—compassion, community, and empathy. On this occasion, he felt it essential to shine a light on the commendable spirit of the Turkish people, noting, “This Ramadan, I felt strongly that my solidarity visit must be here, in Türkiye.”

Guterres accepted the peace award on behalf of UN staff, honoring their humanitarian contributions globally and remembering the humanitarian workers who sacrificed their lives in service. In conclusion, he urged, “Together, let us give peace a chance.”
