António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, has expressed grave concerns over the ongoing turmoil in the Middle East, stating that the situation could escalate beyond control.
He commented, "The unlawful attacks occurring in the Middle East and other areas are inflicting devastating pain and damage to civilians throughout the region."
Guterres also highlighted the dire implications this crisis poses to global economic stability, especially affecting the most vulnerable populations.
"The situation is precarious and could spiral beyond anyone's command," he warned.
He urged for an end to hostilities and called for serious diplomatic negotiations, emphasizing that the stakes have never been higher.
Amidst the ongoing military operations and retaliatory strikes, particularly between the United States and Israel against Iran, the conflict has now entered its seventh day.
UN Relief Chief Tom Fletcher added that humanity is facing a moment of significant peril due to the financial resources fueling the war, while essential aid budgets are being slashed.
Fletcher declared the rising tensions as a major humanitarian emergency, requiring immediate intervention from regional powers.
Volker Türk, the head of the UN Human Rights Commission, cautioned that the conflict is extending beyond its initial participants, calling on nations to urgently work towards de-escalation.
In contrast, Amir Iravani, Iran's Permanent Representative, insisted that Iran does not seek conflict or escalation but will defend its sovereignty. He urged all countries to denounce what he described as the "unjust war against the Iranian people."
He pressed the UN Security Council to take immediate and decisive action, warning that failure to do so could have devastating ramifications for global peace and security.
Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher reiterated that the expanding conflict could lead to significant humanitarian crises that go far beyond the region. He reiterated the need for commitment to international law and the safeguarding of humanitarian workers, stressing that humanitarian teams would remain dedicated to assisting civilians affected by the violence.
He concluded with a call for a swift shift towards peace and prudence, asserting that it is imperative to halt hostilities and engage in genuine dialogue and negotiations consistent with the United Nations Charter.
