The militaries of Ecuador and the United States have started coordinated efforts against drug-trafficking groups, which have been classified as terrorist organizations. This initiative is intended to dismantle networks involved in the cocaine trade in Ecuador, as reported by the US Southern Command. The announcement followed President Daniel Noboa's declaration of a "new phase" in Ecuador’s campaign against drug cartels.

Ecuador's geographical position, bordering Colombia and Peru—known for being the leading global producers of cocaine—and possessing significant ports, renders it a hub for illegal cocaine smuggling. Approximately 70% of the world’s cocaine is said to transit through the country.

This collaborative action comes after talks between President Noboa and leaders from the US Southern Command, namely Francis Donovan and Mark Schafer. The discussions emphasized the importance of sharing intelligence and coordinating operations at key locations such as ports and airports.

A statement from the US Southern Command indicated, "Together, we are taking decisive action to confront narco-terrorists who have long inflicted terror, violence, and corruption on citizens throughout the hemisphere."

This operation initiative follows the recent rejection by Ecuadorian citizens of a referendum geared towards re-establishing foreign military bases, a decision interpreted as a hurdle to enhancing the US military presence in the area. Ecuador has increasingly gained notoriety as a significant center for drug trafficking over recent years.

Since September, US forces have executed more than 40 operations targeting suspected drug vessels in both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Additionally, in January, the US apprehended former Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro, alleging his involvement in "narco-terrorism" and his role in facilitating cocaine shipments to the US.

The ongoing campaign highlights the Trump administration's unwavering commitment to combatting organized crime and reducing cocaine shipments from South America, while also bolstering security cooperation between the US and Ecuador in the region.
