The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a warning concerning potential terrorist threats directed at American establishments and US-affiliated educational institutions within Nigeria, urging US citizens present in the country to adopt heightened security measures.
In a security advisory released late on Monday, American nationals were advised to remain alert, particularly when traveling to the US Embassy in Abuja, the US Consulate General in Lagos, and US-affiliated schools.
The advisory stated, 'The US Embassy in Abuja alerts US citizens to a possible terrorist threat against US facilities and US-affiliated schools in Nigeria.' This information was initially shared on X, previously known as Twitter.
US nationals were encouraged to implement precautionary security strategies, which include varying their travel routes and times when visiting US diplomatic missions or related establishments.
'Citizens are recommended to take extra precautions while traveling to the US Embassy, the US Consulate General in Lagos, and US-affiliated schools, which involves changing travel times and routes,' the advisory specified.
The communication emphasized that being aware of one’s surroundings and avoiding predictable routines could significantly mitigate personal risk.
The embassy reiterated, 'Increasing awareness of your surroundings, avoiding predictable patterns, and discussing security measures with your family can substantially lower your risk.'
As part of the safety recommendations, the embassy advised American citizens to stay vigilant in public areas and steer clear of large gatherings. Specific guidance included being mindful of their surroundings, maintaining a low profile, reassessing personal security plans, changing usual travel routes, keeping mobile phones charged for emergencies, and being alert in crowded places, as well as familiarizing themselves with emergency exits in public buildings.
Additionally, the embassy suggested that US citizens stay informed about security updates and travel risks in Nigeria by referencing official travel advisories. 'For more information regarding threats and risks to travelers in Nigeria, please check the Nigeria Country Information page on travel.state.gov,' it stated.
Despite the warning, the embassy has confirmed that its consular services are still available. 'The Consular Sections of Embassy Abuja and Consulate General Lagos are operational,' the statement reaffirmed, encouraging citizens to persist in checking official communication channels for further updates.
