U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers took a five-year-old boy and his father into custody during an immigration enforcement action in Minnesota, as reported by school authorities and the family's legal representative.
The young child, identified as Liam Ramos, was with his father, Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias, when ICE agents approached them outside their residence. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that the agents' objective was to apprehend the father and asserted that the child was not intentionally targeted.
In a communication on the platform X, DHS declared that ICE "did NOT target a child," alleging that the father absconded and "abandoned" his son. ICE further explained that agents prioritized the child's well-being in the frigid weather, attempting to transfer him to relatives inside the home, but were reportedly refused.
Local educational officials and eyewitnesses have presented a differing narrative. Zena Stenvik, Superintendent of Columbia Heights Public Schools, raised concerns about why a five-year-old was kept outdoors and prevented from entering his home with another adult. A member of the school board indicated that she had offered to care for the child but was unsuccessful.
Images circulated to the media depict the child in winter attire outdoors, with an officer holding his backpack. The school district confirmed these images were provided by credible community members.
According to the family's attorney, Marc Prokosch, both the child and his father are currently held at a detention facility in San Antonio, Texas, and legal aid is working to connect with them. He noted that the family arrived from Ecuador in 2024 and were in the process of seeking asylum, adhering to immigration protocols.
ICE has refuted claims of detaining the child, asserting that the father himself requested the child remain with him. DHS has not yet provided further comment.
U.S. Vice-President JD Vance, during a visit to Minnesota, defended the operation, stating that ICE agents had no other recourse after the father attempted to flee. Protests have persisted throughout the state amidst intensified enforcement efforts under Operation Metro Surge, which officials claim is directed at individuals involved in serious criminal activities.
School administrators have indicated that numerous students within the district have been recently impacted by ICE operations, expressing concerns that these enforcement actions are causing distress within the community.
