The US Department of State has released a worldwide security alert, cautioning American citizens globally to be mindful of possible threats from groups linked to Iran.
According to a statement from the State Department, "The Department of State advises Americans worldwide, particularly in the Middle East, to exercise increased vigilance. Americans traveling abroad should adhere to security guidance issued by their nearest U.S. embassy or consulate."
The alert also mentioned that "periodic airspace closures may lead to travel disruptions. U.S. diplomatic facilities, even outside the Middle East, have faced threats."
Additionally, it warned that "groups sympathetic to Iran may target U.S. interests abroad, as well as places associated with the United States and/or American nationals around the world."
This alert follows a stark warning from Iranian military spokesperson Gen. Abolfazl Shekarchi, who stated that Iranian operatives would be targeting popular tourist destinations in retaliation for ongoing U.S. and Israeli actions against Iran.
Heightened tensions have emerged across the Middle East since the U.S. and Israel conducted airstrikes in Iran on February 28, resulting in the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
In retaliation, Iran launched rockets targeting American interests, including tourist locations in Dubai and strikes in Israel.
Last Friday evening, a missile exploded near the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, striking the helipad of the large compound that has increasingly become a target for Iranian-backed militants since the start of the Middle East conflict.
On Sunday, Iran declared its intention to adopt a strategy of "zero restraint," pledging to hit energy infrastructure throughout the Persian Gulf and financial institutions affiliated with the U.S. should President Trump execute his threats to "obliterate" Tehran’s power facilities.
