A United States special envoy has confirmed plans for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, signaling an intensified diplomatic push by the U.S. to broker peace in Ukraine.

US special envoy Steve Witkoff stated that he, along with Jared Kushner, son- in-law to former President Donald Trump, is scheduled to meet with Putin on Thursday. The purpose of these discussions is to explore avenues for concluding the ongoing war in Ukraine. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Witkoff also indicated that he would be engaging with Ukrainian officials as part of these diplomatic efforts.

"I’m hopeful that all meetings will go well on that subject. We need a peace," Witkoff remarked.

Witkoff suggested that both parties are approaching an agreement, characterizing the remaining points of contention as the final "10 per cent" required to finalize a deal and bring an end to Russia's nearly four-year-old war in Ukraine.

Ukrainian officials have indicated their agreement with a substantial portion of the proposed peace framework. However, they emphasize that crucial issues remain unresolved, particularly the sensitive matter of territorial integrity.

Kyiv is also seeking robust security assurances from its international partners, viewing these guarantees as vital for preventing future acts of Russian aggression.

This diplomatic engagement occurs against the backdrop of continued Russian attacks targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure during the harsh winter months, exacerbating the hardships faced by civilians across the country.

Washington has heightened its diplomatic activities in recent months in an effort to bring an end to what has become the deadliest conflict in Europe since the Second World War.
