Chief John Onombem, the village chief of Abashiya, has been kidnapped by armed bandits along with five others in the Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
A local community leader, who chose to remain anonymous, responded to inquiries on Saturday night, confirming the tragic events.
The leader revealed that a large group of bandits, armed with sophisticated weaponry, descended upon the village, prompting a mass exodus of villagers to the nearby Alele community. During the attack, the bandits invaded the chief’s residence and seized him.
According to the source, the chief's poor health condition prevented him from escaping when the armed assailants approached.
“The village chief has been ill. Upon hearing that bandits were entering Abashiya, the villagers fled, but the chief was unable to run because of his health challenges. As a result, the bandits whisked him away,” he stated.
The bandits subsequently made their way to the adjacent Badoko village, where they kidnapped five additional individuals—four men and one woman.
A security official, who also requested anonymity, verified the kidnappings and indicated that joint security forces are actively searching the forest to rescue the victims.
While a police source confirmed the incident, they refrained from providing further comments.
At the time of this report, the spokesperson for the Kaduna State Police Command, DSP Hassan Mansur, had not yet issued a statement regarding the abduction.
