Danny Welbeck netted both goals as Brighton & Hove Albion triumphed over Liverpool with a score of 2-1 during their English Premier League encounter at the Amex Stadium on Saturday morning.
The former Manchester United player scored in both halves, significantly impacting Liverpool's ambition for a top-four finish in what has been a disappointing campaign for the current EPL champions. Milos Kerkez provided Liverpool's only goal.
The match took a turn for the worse early for Liverpool, with Hugo Ekitike sustaining an injury just eight minutes into the game. Ekitike, the team's leading scorer this season, had to be substituted, prompting manager Arne Slot to make adjustments to the squad almost immediately.
Seizing the opportunity from the reshuffled lineup, Brighton took the lead in the 14th minute. Welbeck out-jumped Ibrahima Konate to head in a flicked header from Diego Gomez back into the box.
Liverpool attempted to respond through a header from Alexis Mac Allister, saved by Bart Verbruggen. However, a blunder by Lewis Dunk resulted in an equalizer when Kerkez capitalized on a back pass meant for Verbruggen, flicking the ball into the net to level the match at 1-1 in the 30th minute.
In the second half, Liverpool was expected to control the game, but it was Brighton who regained the lead as Welbeck secured his second goal of the match. The 35-year-old striker finished from close range after Jack Hinshelwood set up a pass from Yankuba Minteh, marking his 12th goal of the season.
Liverpool pressed hard for a comeback, but Brighton maintained their composure to clinch the victory, moving them up to eighth place in the Premier League standings. This defeat marked Liverpool's tenth in the league, as they remain in fifth place with 49 points after 31 matches, enduring a winless streak in their last three league games.
