The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that is aligned with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has announced its commitment to proceed with the planned convention on Sunday. The group claims that its membership has been strengthened by the inclusion of notable figures such as former Senate President Bukola Saraki and the ex-Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido.
According to the faction, all necessary preparations for the convention are in place, and they assert that they have not received any legal orders preventing the event.
"Reports or insinuations suggesting an injunction are merely things we've observed on social media. By God's grace, the convention will take place as scheduled on March 29," stated Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, the faction's National Publicity Secretary, during a press conference on Saturday.
When asked about the possibility of their convention facing similar challenges as the recent one in Ibadan, the spokesman responded that the previous assembly lacked legal backing and was restricted by a court. He emphasized that their current gathering has the full support of the legal system, party members, and the law.
"Even among family members, not everyone will hold the same view. However, I want to highlight that we have garnered significant support within the party. Key individuals such as Bukola Saraki, who had not previously aligned with our faction, will now be present, alongside Sule Lamido and many others," he added.
The spokesman also mentioned that several senators, National Assembly members, and significant stakeholders who had initially not identified with them would attend the convention. "The party is moving in a new direction. Those who feel alienated and choose not to align with us are exercising their constitutional rights, and we respect that," he continued.
He further assured that they have adhered to all party guidelines and processes. "We are fully compliant. By God's grace, the convention will proceed tomorrow."
During a structured statement made before the question-and-answer session, Mohammed stated that the National Caretaker Working Committee (NCWC) has diligently worked to ensure a credible, transparent, and inclusive convention that reflects the collective aspirations of members nationwide.
“All necessary steps have been taken to ensure the event is smooth, peaceful, and successful. We want to assure all party members and the general public that this convention is conducted in strict adherence to our party's constitution and applicable laws. The PDP stands as a lawful entity dedicated to bolstering democracy in Nigeria,” he remarked.
Addressing recent events, including attempts by certain individuals to disrupt their plans, the spokesperson urged all members to remain calm and focused. "The party has continuously reached out for reconciliation, and that opportunity is still available. However, we will not permit any actions that could compromise the progress and stability of our esteemed party.
"We call on all delegates, stakeholders, and observers to maintain order and civility. This convention is a collective effort, and its success hinges on our shared responsibility and unity."
