The Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA) has initiated a climate action campaign that spans various state commands across the country.
This movement was introduced at an Environmental Education Workshop that took place in Gwagwalada, Abuja, under the auspices of the Green Borders Initiative. This initiative underscores the association’s dedication to promoting environmental conservation, increasing climate awareness, and fostering sustainable community development.
The workshop launched a comprehensive national framework for climate action that is set to be implemented throughout state commands, in accordance with the national priorities set forth by the Federal Ministry of Environment and the National Council on Climate Change.
During the event, the president of COWA, Mrs. Kikelomo Adeniyi, characterized environmental responsibility as an extension of national service, emphasizing that sustainable communities are vital for national prosperity.
She highlighted that the Green Borders Initiative is designed to institutionalize organized environmental efforts within Customs communities and is open to strategic partnerships that can enhance its effectiveness across the nation.
In his keynote address, the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, praised COWA for aligning its campaign theme, “Green Barracks, Green Borders: Advancing Environmental Stewardship for a Sustainable Future,” with the country’s environmental restoration goals.
The minister pointed out various efforts including nationwide awareness campaigns, land restoration projects linked to the ACReSAL initiative, investments in recycling infrastructure, and the issuance of a Sovereign Green Bond, which showcase a structured approach to environmental financing and public confidence in sustainable initiatives.
