A woman aged 39 has been arrested on charges of attempted murder following an incident where she allegedly stabbed her pregnant colleague multiple times at a retail store in Namakgale, Phalaborwa, South Africa.
Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, a spokesperson for the Limpopo provincial police, reported on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, that the victim, who remains unnamed, was en route to work when she received a call informing her that another woman was looking for her at the store.
Upon arriving at the location, the victim went to the storeroom to collect stock and started arranging shelves when the suspect approached her. They exchanged greetings before the suspect purportedly launched a violent attack, stabbing her repeatedly with a knife.
Intervention by store security personnel led to the apprehension of the suspect, who was overpowered while the victim was rescued, having sustained multiple stab wounds.
Emergency medical services and police were called to the scene promptly, and the wounded woman was taken to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care. Details on her condition, as well as that of her unborn child, have not been disclosed.
The suspect was arrested at the store, and law enforcement officials recovered a sharp object suspected to be the weapon used in the assault.
According to Ledwaba, initial investigations indicate that the assailant had entered the store with the intent to harm the victim while masquerading as a shopper with a trolley containing knives.
The precise motive for the assault is still being scrutinized; however, sources familiar with the situation suggest that the altercation was spurred by both women being romantically involved with the same man.
The accused woman made her initial court appearance at the Namakgale Magistrate's Court on Monday, facing formal charges of attempted murder.
