Samson Itodo, who serves as the Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, stated on Friday that the Nigerian Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) made a positive move with its revised election timetable for the upcoming 2027 general elections. He noted that this adjustment coincides with recommendations previously put forth by various civil society organizations.

Commenting on the new election schedule released by INEC, Itodo remarked, "Yiaga Africa welcomes the unveiling of the revised election timeline, which aligns with the suggestions made earlier by civil society entities, including Yiaga Africa."

He emphasized that the need for this revision became apparent with the introduction of new clauses in the Electoral Act 2026.

Moreover, Itodo pointed out that the updated timetable issued by INEC is designed to set appropriate dates and programming for the elections. However, he expressed concerns regarding the notably tight timeframes allocated for essential electoral activities.

"While we recognize the importance of adjusting the election dates, we urge all relevant stakeholders to adhere strictly to these timelines, ensuring meticulous and thorough execution of every essential task," he added.

He further warned that the compressed schedule poses significant concerns regarding the quality and integrity of vital preparation processes.

Additionally, he expressed hope that, despite these challenges, the nation would be fully prepared for the elections scheduled for January. This marks the first occasion since 1999 that general elections in Nigeria will be held in January.
