The Edo State Police Command has detained 14 suspected members of a cult for allegedly hijacking a corpse during a funeral in the state.
The individuals, aged between 18 and 40, were arrested in Uromi, located in the Esan North-East Local Government Area, after a violent incident disrupted the burial rites.
According to SP Eno Ikoedem, the spokesperson for the police command, the disruption occurred when suspected cultists interrupted the ceremony and made off with the body intended for burial.
During the commotion, the suspects also assaulted two motorcycle riders, causing serious injuries.
The police quickly intervened, managing to apprehend the suspects and restore order in the vicinity.
Ikoedem stated that various items were seized as evidence, which included 11 cutlasses, a dagger, and a shovel.
The victims of the assault have been taken to the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH) for medical care, and authorities are continuing investigations to uncover the motives behind the corpse hijacking.
