An impressive performance by 18-year-old Australian athlete Gout Gout has seen him break a long-standing 200-meter record previously held by Usain Bolt. The young sprinter achieved this milestone on Sunday, April 12, at the Australian Athletics Championships, crossing the finish line in 19.67 seconds.
This remarkable time surpasses Usain Bolt's personal best of 19.93 seconds recorded before he turned 23. Gout, at just 18 years old, has now significantly outpaced that early career benchmark.
For an athlete of his age, this achievement places him among the elite sprinters globally this season. It also signifies a substantial improvement from his previous best of 20.02 seconds, highlighting his rapid development over the last year.
Gout had previously run under 20 seconds, but that performance was aided by an illegal tailwind and not officially recognised. Sunday's race marked his first official sub-20 second run under legal conditions, instantly making a significant mark on the sprinting world.
The final race featured a competitive field, with Aidan Murphy securing second place in 19.88 seconds and Calab Law coming in third at 20.21 seconds. However, Gout demonstrated superior speed in the latter half of the race, maintaining his lead after the curve and extending it towards the finish line.
