A Magistrate’s Court in Akure, Ondo State, has remanded Anthony Alabi, a 21-year-old carpenter, at the Olokuta Correctional Centre following charges of murder and theft.
Alabi faces accusations relating to the death of Veronica Olaseni, a 58-year- old woman. The police brought him before the court on two counts: one of murder and one of theft.
During the proceedings, the defendant admitted to engaging in sexual acts with the deceased's body. "I didn’t want her body to waste, so I had intercourse with her corpse," he told the court.
The court did not accept Alabi's plea due to a lack of jurisdiction over the matter. Presiding Magistrate Temitope Adurota ordered Alabi's remand at the correctional facility pending further advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Inspector Folashade Adebayo elaborated on the case, revealing that the alleged offenses took place on March 2, 2026, around 2:30 p.m. in Iboropa-Akoko, Akoko North-East Local Government area. She stated that Alabi reportedly strangled Olaseni after she recognized him during an attempted theft.
Additionally, Adebayo indicated that Alabi stole various items from the victim, including an Infinix phone worth N150,000, a cutlass valued at N10,000, and an Access Bank ATM card belonging to Olaseni.
The prosecution’s charge outlines that Alabi, on March 2, 2026, in Iboropa- Akoko, unlawfully took Olaseni's life by choking her, an act contrary to Section 319 of the Criminal Code Law of Ondo State, 2006. It also details that he stole the mentioned property which violates Section 390 of the same Code.
The prosecutor urged the court to keep Alabi in remand while awaiting guidance from the DPP. The defendant, who did not have legal representation, confessed to his actions, explaining he intended to steal cashew nuts from Olaseni’s farm but turned violent when she recognized him.
The magistrate directed that the case file be sent to the DPP's office for further advice and scheduled the next court appearance for June 6 for mention.
